History
A department store through time
Located in the heart of Oxford on Cornmarket Street, Boswells was one of the world’s oldest family-owned department stores and a much-loved part of the local community.
The store first traded in 1738 and was initially founded by Francis Boswell at 50 Cornmarket Street. Starting up business manufacturing and selling luggage and trunks, it is believed their wares were taken on Captain Cook’s trip to explore the Southern Hemisphere.
In the tradition of great British department stores, it became a place of discovery – a treasure trove of toys, cosmetics, fashion, household essentials, a haberdashery, well-known tearoom and café.
Now, reimagined as a boutique hotel with a restaurant, bars, spa and a labyrinth of spaces to discover and explore, The Store will carry forward this legacy of innovation and capture the hearts and imagination of future generations.
